Nike Dunk releases show no sign of slowing down in 2022. We recently caught up with friend of Flatspot David Yap aka @swoosh_tapes to take a closer look at part one of the Nike SB Fruity Pack that will be available via raffle this week.

Swoosh Tapes is a community driven Instagram account that serves up all sorts of swoosh related video content; from forgotten about Nike SB footage from the early days, newly released content and everything in between. The Swoosh Tapes account has seen a lot of traction since its inception and shows no signs of slowing down.

We’ve all heard the age-old saying, “Sometimes skateboarding involves not skateboarding.” In a way, Elissa Steamer’s brand, Gnarhunters, was born from the act of not skateboarding. Shortly after discovering surfing, Nike SB skater Elissa became obsessed with the pastime that is so common along the California coastline. With time and other life events, skateboarding became less of a priority as she spent more time in the ocean.

Skateboarders and surfers view their respective passions in completely different ways. Skateboarding thrives on inclusion and its ease of accessibility. Alternatively, surfing is more competitive because there are only a certain number of quality waves at a particular coastal break. To better understand surfing as a skateboarder, in addition to seeking an avenue for her creative energy, Elissa started Gnarhunters in 2011.

Eleven years later, she has earned the opportunity to collaborate with her current shoe sponsor to create the Gnarhunters x Nike SB Dunk Low. We were beyond thrilled to get on a Zoom call with Elissa and Nike SB Marketing Manager Colin Kennedy to discuss not only the shoe, but also the roles of skateboarding and surfing in Elissa’s life.

A study has discovered that skateboarding for middle-aged individuals can be very beneficial, aiding in the management of health issues, creating an opportunity to bond with their kids, and being a source of strength to handle personal struggles.

Dr Paul O’Connor, lecturer at the University of Exeter, undertook a study involving interviews with middle-aged skateboarders and observations of skateboarding communities in the UK and Hong Kong.

For the elderly, Dr O’Connor identified taking part in sports as a “spiritual outlet” in their lives. This provided them with a sense of friendship, independence and belonging to a wider group.

Dr O’Connor shared with The Independent that he had devoted a lot of his time to skateparks and was quite familiar with the skaters his age. He noted that the language used to describe skateboarding was very heartfelt and vital to their lives. This prompted him to delve deeper into the experience of growing older in a youth subculture.

According to his initial findings, the media’s portrayal of middle-aged skateboarders as desperate for attention was far from the truth; on the contrary, these veteran skateboarders were held in high esteem by their peers.

He proclaimed that their never-ending determination, combined with their expertise and know-how, was regularly used to contribute to the skateboarding community in an unofficial manner.

According to Dr O’Connor, for some, skating was about making friends and forming social ties, for others it was about having a space to be creative, independent and free, and for some it even became a spiritual outlet.

“After a break of 20 years or more, a few people started skateboarding again, mostly because of their kids. But there were other motivating factors too, such as the construction of new skateparks, the notion that it could help prevent dementia, and the fact that it looked cool on television.”

“A woman, who had gone through a breakup, decided to start anew by buying a skateboard. It was the only thing that reminded her of her childhood and brought her a sense of bliss. Skateboarding has proven to be beneficial in providing autonomy and liberty to its participants.”

Dr O’Connor underscored the advantages of skateboarding, asserting: “The rewards from skateboarding appear to be the sensation of autonomy and liberty. It is something that no one can do for you, and there are no actual regulations so you can do whatever you desire.”

His advice to those who want to start skateboarding but fear they are too old to try? He said: “Firstly you are never too old. Many of the people I spoke to – myself included – had to deal with feeling too old to skate when they reached 20. Now people are picking up boards for their first time in their fifties and sixties.

Nike SB’s newest Dunk Low collaboration is a tribute to two of the most iconic figures in rap and hip-hop culture: Run The Jewels. This capsule collection, designed by Killer Mike and EI-P, features both a Dunk Low and Dunk High and is inspired by RTJ’s signature symbols, skate culture, and vivid comic book colors.

Since 2013, Run The Jewels have been building their influential legacy through their self-titled album and their 2020 release, ‘RTJ4’. Killer Mike and El-P, two well-established hip-hop artists from the ’90s and early ’00s, collaborated on the track ‘Tougher Colder Killer’ and El-P’s album ‘Cancer 4 Cure’, which saw the two come together to form Run The Jewels. The group’s name originates from a line in LL Cool J’s ‘Cheesy Rat Blues’, which references New York stick-up slang. Themes in their music include socio-political topics, their relationship with Adult Swim, and their veteran rap statuses.

Following the success of the Nike SB MF Doom Dunk High, the Nike SB ‘De La Soul’ Dunk Low Pro and the Nike SB ‘Dinosaur Jr’ Dunk High Premium in 2007, Nike has released the Nike SB x Run The Jewels capsule to marry influential music culture with creative design. This two part Dunk collection celebrates 4/20 with exclusive commemorative details beneath each insole; 4.20.10 ‘Jaimily’ in honour of El-P’s wedding anniversary and 4.20.75 in reference to Killer Mike’s birthday.

The Nike SB x Run The Jewels Dunk Low is an imaginative take on the basketball classic, boasting a delicate Miami Vice-style colour palette with a light blue outsole and ‘Blue Chill’ uppers crafted from both suede and nubuck. The sneaker has a perforated toe box, an all-over ‘Run The Jewels’ outsole print, a full length cupsole stitch, interchangeable braided laces, a circular underfoot tread and pink suede Swooshes on the panelled midfoot. Additionally, the suede Zoom Air insoles boast printed finger-gun and fist RTJ logos, while the padded leather tongue and woven ‘Nike SB Dunk Low Pro’ tags complete the design. Gold stitch embroidered ‘Nike’ branding is stitched across each leather heel.

The Nike SB x Run The Jewels Dunk High is a stylish sneaker that draws on the duo’s expressive undertone. The black leather underlays are complemented by shaggy faux fur uppers in a contrasting shade of ‘Active Pink’. 3D gem-style Swooshes, finger-gun and fist logos, perforated forefoot detailing, and interchangeable laces add to the sneaker’s distinctive look. It is also equipped with a full length cupstole stitch, a solid pink rubber outsole, Zoom Air inserts, a padded high-cut collar, a padded suede lining, printed suede insoles, and classic woven ‘Nike SB Dunk High’ tongue labels.

Closing our Nike SB x Polaroid Dunk Low ‘In Focus’ series is Alec McLeish. A born and bred London skater, Alec could often be found at Shell Centre or Southbank as a teenager in the mid 2000’s and didn’t truly find his love for photography until he took classes in college once he had left school. It was here that he realised that shooting skateboarding in the classic sense didn’t hold too much of an interest for him, but rather it was capturing the special moments in between that can often be overlooked or forgotten about that caught his attention. Alec’s keen eye has lead him to work with brands such as Supreme, Aries, Converse and Nike but he still takes the time to this day to shoot his own projects and grow his portfolio.
In this final edition of In Focus, we take a look directly at Alec’s experiences at Southbank over the years.
